PCSing to Fort Sill?
Here Are the Questions Everyone Asks Before Moving to Lawton, Oklahoma
If you just found out you’re PCS’ing to Fort Sill, first of all… welcome to Oklahoma, where the weather changes faster than Army schedules and everyone suddenly becomes a meteorologist when the wind picks up.

As a local real estate agent who works with military families relocating to the Fort Sill and Lawton area, I see the same questions come up over and over in PCS groups. So, I thought I’d put together a quick guide to help make your move a little easier.
Question 1.
“What are the best areas to live near Fort Sill?”
This depends on your lifestyle and commute preferences, but some popular areas include:
– West Lawton
– Elgin
– Cache
– Medicine Park
– East side neighborhoods close to base
– Fletcher and surrounding rural areas if you want more land
Some families want quick access to post, while others want larger yards, quieter neighborhoods, or specific school districts. There’s truly a little bit of everything here.
Question 2.
“Should we rent or buy?”
A lot of military families are surprised by how affordable homes can be in Southwest Oklahoma compared to many duty stations.
Depending on your timeline and goals, buying can sometimes make more financial sense than renting, especially if you expect to stay a few years or are thinking long-term investment opportunities.
Every situation is different, and I always recommend looking at both options before making a decision.
Question 3.
“How far is everything from base?”
One thing people love about Lawton and Fort Sill is convenience.
Most shopping, restaurants, schools, parks, and neighborhoods are within a reasonable drive. Unlike some larger military cities, you usually are not spending half your life sitting in traffic.
Plus, you’ll quickly learn:
“In Oklahoma, 15 minutes away is basically next door.”
Question 4.
“What’s the weather really like?”
Honestly?
You might use your heater, air conditioner, and windshield wipers all in the same day.
But the sunsets here are incredible, storm season keeps life interesting, and Oklahoma skies are something you truly have to experience in person.
Question 5
“Are there good schools and family activities?”
Yes! Families often ask about:
– Lawton Public schools
– Cache schools
– Elgin schools
There are also parks, sports programs, lakes, hiking spots, Medicine Park adventures, Wichita Mountains wildlife, and plenty of community events throughout the year.
And yes… you will eventually see buffalo roaming around nearby and realize Oklahoma is actually kind of awesome.
Question 6.
“What should we know before moving here?”
A few local tips:
– Always keep a weather app handy.
– Tornado sirens are normal here.
– People are generally very friendly.
– You’ll hear “y’all” more than expected.
– Braum’s will become part of your weekly routine.
– Never underestimate Oklahoma wind.
Question 7.
“How do I find the right realtor for a PCS move?”
You want someone who:
– understands military timelines
– communicates well
– can do virtual tours
– knows local neighborhoods
– helps beyond just opening doors
PCS moves can already feel stressful enough. Having someone local who can help answer questions before you arrive can make a huge difference.
